[Info-Bureau] US Attorney Escalates Attack on Palestinians inMidwest

U.S. Attorney Escalates Attacks on Civil Liberties of Anti-War, Palestinian Human Rights Activists

Call U.S. AttorneyPatrick Fitzgeraldfirst thingMonday morning!(contact info at bottom of this email)

On Friday, May 6, the U.S. government froze the bank accounts of Hatem Abudayyeh and his wife, Naima. This unwarranted attack on a leading member of the Palestinian community inChicagois the latest escalation of the repression of anti-war and Palestinian community organizers by theFBI, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, and U.S.Attorney GeneralEric Holder. Hatem Abudayyeh is one of 23 activists fromMinnesota,Michigan, andIllinoissubpoenaed to afederal grand juryin Chicago, and his home was raided by the FBI in September of last year. Neither Hatem Abudayyeh nor Naima Abudayyeh have been charged with any crime.

One of the bank accounts frozen was exclusively in Naima Abudayyehs name. Leaders of the national Committee to Stop FBI Repression, as well as Chicagos Coalition to Protect Peoples Rights are appalled at the governments attempt to restrict the familys access to its finances, especially so soon before Mothers Day. Not only does the governments action seriously disrupt the lives of the Abudayyehs and their five-year-old daughter, but it represents anattack on Chicagos Arab community and activist community and the fundamental rights of Americans tofreedom of speech.

The persecution of the Abudayyeh family is anotherexample of the criminalization of Palestinians, their supporters, and their movement for justice and liberation. There has been widespread criticism of the FBI and local law enforcement for theirracial profilingand scapegoating of Arab and Muslim Americans. These repressive tactics include infiltration of community centers and mosques, entrapment of young men, and the prominent case of 11 students from the University of California campuses at Irvine and Riverside who have been subpoenaed to a grand jury and persecuted for disrupting a speech byMichael Oren, Israeli Ambassador to the US. The governments attempt to conflate the anti-war andhuman rights movementswith terrorism is a cynical attempt to capitalize on the current political climate in order to silence Palestinians and other people of conscience who exercise theirFirst Amendment rightsin a manner which does not conform to the administrations foreign policy agenda in theMiddle East.

The issuance of subpoenas against the 23 activists has been met with widespread opposition and criticism across the country.Six members of the U.S. Congress, including five in the past month, have sent letters to either Holder or President Obama, expressing grave concern for the violations of thecivil libertiesand rights of the 23 activists whose freedom is on the line. Three additional U.S. representatives have also promised letters, as thousands of constituents and other people of conscience across the U.S. have demanded an end to this assault on legitimate political activism and dissent. Over 60Minnesota state legislatorsalso issued a resolution condemning the subpoenas.

TheMidwestactivists have been expecting indictments for some time. The freezing of the Abudayyeh family's bank accounts suggests that the danger of indictments is imminent.

Take actionMonday, May 9:
Call U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald at312-353-5300.

Then dial 0 (zero) for the operator and ask to leave a message with the Duty Clerk.
Demand Fitzgerald
-- Unfreeze the bank accounts of the Abudayyeh family and
-- Stop repression against Palestinian, anti-war andinternational solidarity activists.

In solidarity,
The Committee to Stop FBI Repression and
The Coalition to Protect Peoples Rights

WOODSIDE, New York Filipino activists in New York joined the Global Day of Action Against Nuclear Reactor Plants Tuesday.

In commemoration of the 25th year anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant disaster in Ukraine, the International League of Peoples Struggle (ILPS) held a candle light vigil at the Bayanihan Center in Woodside, New York Tuesday night.
Its meant to call attention to the multiple partial meltdowns happening at the Fukushima Nuclear Complex in Japan and to demand the protection of the Japanese people.
Yves Nibungco of Bayan USA said, On this Global Day of Action, we are demanding that nuclear power plants are immediately shut down because these plants pose great danger to the community.
Meantime, dozens of New York residents have been regularly holding protests at the Union Square in midtown Manhattan for the closure of what is believed to be the riskiest nuclear reactor in the country.
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission estimates the Indian Point Energy Centers nuclear reactor number 3 in Buchanan, New York has a 1 in 10,000 chance of being damaged by an earthquake.
On top of that, the three nuclear reactors at the Indian Point Nuclear Facility rests on top of two intersecting earthquake fault lines The Ramapo fault line.
That means, the usually crowded Times Square sitting just 40 miles away from the nuclear reactor, has the highest risk of earthquake damage. Bronx, New York is just 20 miles away.
Teresa Gutierrez of the International Action Center said, I dont feel safe at all, I dont feel safe at all about having one close by. I hope the movement against the nuclear power plants will elevate, grow and get stronger and organize.
Independent researchers showed that the Indian Point Nuclear Plant supplies about 20 to 30 percent of New Yorks need to power its vast underground mass transit system, trains and millions of homes and businesses.
Closing the nuclear plant would significantly increase electricity price by an average of 25 percent and occasionally up to 130 percent in some areas.
But anti-nuke activists said the risk is greater than the benefits the nuclear reactors in New York provide.
Nibungco said, Its quite possible that the Indian Point Nuclear Reactor accidentally breaks down and cause a meltdown. This would be a huge disaster that could damage and harm not only thousands but millions of people in New York and around the country.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said that every nuclear power plant is designed with a margin of safety beyond the strongest earthquake anticipated in that area.
Protestors say the tragedy in Japan only underscores the dangers that nuclear power reactors pose especially when disaster strikes.
The solution, they say, is to develop and rely on safer and cleaner alternatives such as geothermal, wind or solar energy.

[Info-Bureau] Workers demand better jobs, pay on May Day

Workers demand better jobs, pay on May Day

By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA, Associated Press 1 hr 15 mins ago

ISTANBUL Activists marking international workers' day Sunday staged a massive march of 200,000 in Turkey's capital and rallied in cities around the world to demand more jobs, better working conditions and higher wages.

Most of the annual May Day workers' rights marches were peaceful, although demonstrators in the Philippine capital set ablaze a cartoon effigy of Philippine President Benigno Aquino III to protest his buying a luxury car secondhand.

In Istanbul, about 200,000 workers gathered in Taksim Square in the largest such rally there since 34 people died on May Day in 1977, when shooting triggered a stampede. The Turkish unions weren't allowed back into the square May 1 until last year.

"We want light to be shed on the 1977 massacre," Suleyman Celebi, who is running for Parliament in the upcoming elections in June, told CNN-Turk television. Celebi had served as leader of one of the country's largest labor unions, DISK.

Pro-labor demonstrations were also expected Sunday in Russia and Germany.

In Asia, one of the biggest rallies took place in South Korea, where police said 50,000 rallied in Seoul for better labor rights. They also urged the government to contain rising inflation, a growing concern across much of Asia, where food and oil prices have been spiking and threatening to push millions into poverty.

Thousands of workers also marched in Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines to vent their anger over the rising cost of living and growing disparities between the rich and poor.

Police in Seoul said about 50,000 people gathered in a park near the National Assembly, waving signs and chanting anti-government slogans. Some of the protesters marched toward the Assembly building after the rally but no violence erupted, police said. About 8,000 people held a separate rally near City Hall.

"We want to put an end to the barbaric times of unlimited competition and winner-take-all systems," Kim Young-hoon, head of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, said in a speech at the rally, according to his office.

In China, Sunday was the second of a three-day weekend. In the morning, thousands of Chinese holidaymakers flocked to Beijing's Tiananmen Square to watch the daily flag raising ceremony.

The People's Daily, the ruling Communist Party's flagship newspaper, extolled the importance of workers in a changing economy and world. "Work diligently, work honestly, work innovatively," read the editorial's headline.

"Today, when the ways of the world and the national condition undergo profound change, the working class and the working masses, their contributions and hard work, still have a bearing on the realization of the country's goals, the development of China's future and the glory and the dreams of hundreds of millions of Chinese people," the editorial said.

In the Philippines, about 3,000 left-wing workers demanding higher wages held a protest in a Manila square that included setting alight the effigy of Aquino grinning in a luxury car. Aquino was criticized earlier this year for buying a secondhand Porsche in a country where a third of people live on a dollar a day.

They later marched toward an access bridge near the Malacanang presidential palace that was blocked off with barbed wire and heavily armed anti-riot forces.

Aquino earlier met moderate labor leaders in a breakfast meeting, which was snubbed by left-wing groups, and assured them his government was doing all it can to ease their plight.

In Taiwan, about 2,000 people rallied in Taipei to protest the widening income gap and to demand their government create better work conditions.

Protesters said that while President Ma Ying-jeou has made engaging China the centerpiece of his presidency and big companies have benefited from close Chinese trade ties, he has not focused enough on the needs of the middle and working class.

China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing still claims Taiwan as its own.

In Hong Kong, thousands took part in various marches even as the territory's first-ever minimum wage took effect.

About 3,000 people took part in a Sunday morning protest while another 5,000 were expected at an afternoon rally, local media reports said, citing union organizers.

The government said about 300,000 workers will benefit from new legislation that sets the minimum wage at 28 Hong Kong dollars ($3.60) an hour.

But unions are upset about the way the way it has been implemented by the government, saying it doesn't specify whether lunch breaks and rest days should be paid.
