About CPDM

Present Manipur state in the Northeastern part of India was forcibly annexed by the Government of India in 1949. The Government of India had crushed the communist armed struggle in Manipur which had lasted from 1948 to 1951, and kept Manipur under the direct military rule of the central government till 1972 when Manipur was conferred statehood. In the meanwhile the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958, which allows the Indian security forces to carry on human rights violation with impunity, was imposed to suppress the democratic rights of the people. Right of the self of determination of the political community of Manipur has been totally suppressed. Whereas liberation movement has been ongoing; counter revolutionary & reactionary forces in the context of semi-tribalism and semi-feudalism are being generated and perpetuated by the overarching Indian political economy. Right of peace, development and unity are some of the fundamental demands that the people of Manipur have been aspiring for.

It is against this historical background that the Campaign for Peace & Democracy (Manipur) came into being on 17 March 2007 as a democratic organization. The founding members of CPDM have long experience in students' movement on democratic issues. It draws membership primarily from the peasants, workers, unemployed and university students who believe in a society free from colonial subjections and class oppression. It is not funded by any government or international financial funding institution. It derives its fund from the voluntary donation by the members and sympathizers. During the initial phase of its formation for the last few years, CPDM concentrate more on gathering of reports and drafting of theoretical literature, attempted expansion of mass base and coordination with fraternal organizations on issues of common concern. CPDM interprets internal questions prevailing in Manipur from the theoretical perspectives of historical materialism and addresses the impeding issues on the basis of ideological guidelines towards achieving peace, development and unity in Manipur. It strongly believes in achieving these goals in a classless society free from any form of oppressive and repressive regime. It believes in internationalism or the unity of the democratic forces across the globe in the struggle against subjugation, oppression and exploitation.
