Light the Fire of Revolt and Hope on May Day!

ATIK (Confederation of Workers from Turkey in Europe)

May Day is the day of unity, struggle and solidarity of the international working class, and we wish for hope and strength for all the world's toilers and people. May Day represents struggle, resistance and is a manifesto of the working class. It is a glorious and honourable day acquired through immense sacrifices in the struggle for a free, equal and collective, sharing world.

On this historical day, it is our duty to fill the streets and holler our slogans as loud as we can to create a more livable and free world. May Day of 2010 is in the midst of the social devastation caused by the crisis. However, the socially ravaging policies imposed by the capitalist rulers in order to overcome their crisis is facing strong opposition from the working and toiling masses. The mass resistance of workers and toilers against paying the cost of the crisis is beginning to have an international character.

What is happening in the rulers' world? The analysis of the nature of imperialism--that imperialism is monopoly capitalism with moribund, parasitic and decaying features--is reconfirmed by the reality of the international crisis. Inevitably, grievances and injustices in the system are gradually increasing and producing new and bigger crises. The pseudo-solutions presented by the rulers in order to overcome the crisis produce a new crisis.

With sinking monopolies, trusts and holding banks, even those countries held to be exemplary are being shaken by the economic collapse. In the EU countries, the economies of Greece, then Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Iceland, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal are being seriously shaken. With the growing crisis, antagonistic contradictions are deepening for the bourgeois rulers around the world. Increasing deadlocks are forcing the bourgeoisie into more internal and external militarism.

They are trying to make all the toilers and world's peoples pay the bill of the crisis, which has created an enormous social upheaval. In order to prevent financial crises from turning into crises of political power, `police state' or `state terror' measures have been imposed and enhanced. Social and political destruction is broadened like a spiral to erode democracies. Rights and freedoms acquired through struggle are being usurped one by one. The menace of transforming social crises into social revolt is giving rulers nightmares and pushes them to rely on more reactionary vehicles of power.

What is happening in the ranks of the toiling people? The effect of the crisis on social life in 2010 is that the number of unemployed and poor has dramatically increased. In response, in many countries of the world workers and toilers have cut-in with class actions such as militant street actions, (general) strikes, factory and workplace occupations. The toiling masses' rejection of exploitation, oppression and slavery is growing. The culture of revolt is embracing the Earth again against the dominant culture of oppression imposed by the rulers!

The social devastation imposed on the peoples of the world is encountered in the forms of unjust wars, bloody occupations, and unbridled pillage, unemployment, poverty, social insecurity and usurpation of political rights. The policies of governments to put the burden of the crisis on the shoulders of the people, and the organised struggle against this, are developing the class consciousness of workers and toilers.

Whilst the crisis of capitalism is deepening SOCIALISM IS A HOPE AGAIN! As proven by the united struggle of the TEKEL workers in Turkey, a legitimate and rightful struggle can create a wall of resistance against the attacks of capital. The search for creating a collective, sharing new world as an alternative to the exploitative old world is gaining speed and strength. And for this exact reason our collective duty on May Day and other days is to give strength, energy and speed to the search for class and social liberation.

We must support rebellion and encourage hope on May Day so the system of exploitation, oppression and plunder is demolished!
